We continue to help our home state and local government with user experience and technical strategy to take advantage of the Drupal content management system.
State and local governments across the country are standardizing on open source platforms, particularly on Drupal. With no licensing fees, massive developer community, and the ability to integrate with legacy databases and third party applications, it’s no surprise.
However, the work we do extends beyond enterprise Drupal development. Digital marketing and user experience play a critical goal in government work, particularly when the goal is to communicate clearly and help users solve problems.
OEDIT & Creative Industries
Our first major engagement with the State of Colorado involved a complete redesign of the Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) website. A personal project of Governor Hickenlooper’s office, the site was a key element in bringing business to Colorado. Our challenge was to build and launch a new site on Drupal on a tight timeline (a goal internal resources couldn’t meet), all the while corralling multiple departments toward a common goal.
The OEDIT site is designed to handle a complex editorial workflow between multiple departments through a customized Drupal admin interface. Editorial staff produce content that is carefully moderated by the OEDIT communications team.
Originally designed in 2012, the site theme is being upgraded to support a fully responsive experience while maintaining imagery and a Colorado feel. Since its inception, the site has helped market Colorado, which currently holds the following titles: #1 most economically competitive state (Business Insider, 2014) and the #2 best state to start a business (Entrepreneur, 2013).
Likewise, Creative Industries seeks to promote Colorado as a haven for creative professionals, a new growth sector for the state. Creative Industries is built on a responsive Drupal platform as well for maximum flexibility and user control.
Colorado Energy Office
We assisted Colorado Energy Office with branding materials that help market and educate citizens about all of the programs and activities the Colorado Energy Office has on Colorado and its residents. Logos, print materials and other marketing tools help the agency communicate not only the facts, but the lasting impact of policy.
Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE)
As a large department facing the daunting challenge of migrating to Drupal, our challenge for the CDPHE was two-fold. We assisted as UX consultants, developing a content strategy to improve the information architecture in order to move 4,000 pieces of content. Only by working with representatives in 12 independent departments were we able to achieve a common goal.
Meanwhile, our technical team consulted with Colorado Interactive, a partner Drupal development shop focusing on State-specific development projects. We provided workflow and developer operations (dev ops) support, as well as technical consulting on the platform itself.
Colorado General Assembly
Our latest engagement with the State of Colorado is consulting for a massive consolidation of 20 years of data for the Colorado State Legislature. The aim is to improve efficiency and transparency for internal staff and Colorado citizens alike. Through a user-driven discovery process, our goal is to develop not only a new site, but one that sets the standard for ease of use and engagement with the democratic process.
No matter the project or department, we have a track record of success with the State of Colorado. But more than that, we feel a special kind of pride with the work we do that helps make our state more efficient, more transparent and a better place to live.
